Hi there,
My son has been playing the trumpet for around two years now and he has passed grade 2. He has been told by the dentist that he should have braces fitted at some point ;D . I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences of this and knew if it presents any problems with playing the trumpet. Hopefully not, but I just thought I'd ask!
Cheers

hi there, I'm currently teaching a young trumpet player who has recently had braces put on. They do effect playing at the start, there is loss in range, tone production isn't perfect!etc. However, this cleared up within about 2-4weeks of him playing. its basically just giving time for the muscles in and around the lips to get used to the new shape within the mouth. He also bought a "gum shield" off a music website. i've seen them around but have no idea where to get them.....they basically slot over the metal brace and provide a protective cover for the lips. They seem to help.
Hope this helps.

I am wondering how braces will effect my harmonica playing. I figure that I will just adapt to the change. It's nice to hear that your trumpet student was able to so quickly, though.
