Gerry Mulligan is one of my favourite saxophone players and many people have commented when his CD has been playing in the shop.
Born in 1927, Gerry gained prominence as an arranger for Gene Krupa, and very soon was cutting his low, smooth bari sound on many monumental jazz moments. One of these was a 1957 network TV special with Billie Holiday, Count Basie and Lester Young entitled The Sound of Jazz. Another defining moment was his role on the Miles Davis - Gil Evans master-session Birth of the Cool in 1949. Mulligan's versatility placed him in demand with artists ranging from Chet Baker to Wynton Marsalis throughout his career.
I'd be interested to hear who you like and why.
