Born August 21, 1910 in San Augustine, Texas, Claude Lakey had an interesting and varied life in the music industry and influenced many musicians right up to his passing at eighty years old in 1990.
Claude Lakey speaks for himself:
As a professional player I always felt manufacturers gave very little attention to the saxophone mouthpiece. Good quality mouthpieces were not available. In the 50’s and 60’s music was changing and saxophone players had to go up against amplification and they were getting drown out and had to play real hard to be heard. Players could not push the mouthpieces back in those days as they would just close up and consequently the Saxes were always way in the background. I felt I wanted to do something about it and made my line of mouthpiece to give the player the ability to be soft and delicate if they needed to but also they could play the hell out of it, when needed, without closing up. The mouthpieces are easy to play and if players are willing to give the time necessary to get used to the Lakey mouthpiece the sky is the limit.
We are starting to stock Lakey mouthpieces in the shop - Craig was in the shop testing an Alto Sax 6*3 and a 7*3, loved the sound and power of the 7. RRP is £79 but bought it at a very reasonable introductory price of £69.95
